Alexander Mackenzie Heritage Trail Mapping Project

(Nuxulk-Carrier Grease Trail)

If you have any problems or suggestions e-mail to admin@albertatrailmaps.ca. If you travel the trail and record your track, please send it along.  I will be happy to update the map based on any new information.

1)  Garmin Brand GPS Receivers

  1. Installation to Mapsource, Basecamp and Mapinstall (on a PC)
  1. Download and extract the "Installation File".
  2. Open the file "AM_Trail_setup.exe" contained in the ZIP file and follow the instruction for installation.
  3. Open Basecamp or Mapsource.  In the Map selection tab in the upper left corner, click on the pull down arrow and select "Mackenzie_Trail_Maps".  This will bring up a single map with all of the trail information.
  4. Choose this map and any other maps that you require in the normal fashion and download then to your GPSr as normal.  Within Mapsource, you can also choose to include routing information, which is not possible within Mapinstall (you will get routing in Mapinstall).
  1. Installation to Basecamp/Roadtrip/Mapinstall (on a MAC)
  1. Download and extract the "MAC version Installation File".
  2. Make sure that MapManager is installed on your computer.
  3. Browse to the folder extracted earlier called "AMTrails.gmapi", double click on it and then the "Install" button.
  4. Maps can then be installed to a GPS using Garmin's Mapinstall program.

Data Sources
The data used in the production of this map comes from a variety of sources.  Care should be taken in the field as some information may not be accurate or up to date.  Complain to someone else if you get lost!!

Revsion 1.02
  1. The 4WD section of the trail shown is mostly from a tracklog of the trip that I did in 2008.  We drove some optional sections and some of the main portions may only be an estimate.  It is known that there have been fires through the area since 2008 and some re-routing of the trail may have occured.  Many waypoints that are shown are for the benefit of the 4WD user and are based on travelling east to west.
  2. A hiking tracklog was sourced from http://koordinates.com/layer/3762-alexander-mackenzie-heritage-trail/. The origin of the data is not known, but it states it is from 2008. In locations that the 4WD track above in in the same location of the hiking track, it is shown as a 4WD trail.  In all other locations, it is shown as a trail and the trail name has (hiking) added to the end.  This covers the complete trail and appears to be accurate at least at the date it was walked.
  3. Topographic data, water data, park boundaries, IR boundaries, some waypoints and general road locations were added using data from the federal topographic database.  Road data is notoriously poor and I have corrected important roads as discussed below.
  4. Main access roads to the trail as well as any forestry roads that come near to the trail have been updated using the newest aerial imagery that I could locate.  I've only shown ones that were obvious from the aerial imagery.  There may be other roads and I would suggest carrying a copy of the latest Backroad map book when investigating option to access or escape from the trail.  These maps do show some other possible roads.
